Getting to Know Cuba – Between Rhythm and Resilience – One Photo At a Time

Exhibit Introduction: For many of us, our earliest impressions of Cuba were shaped from a distance, through headlines, history, and moments that felt far removed from everyday life. For years, it remained a place I hadn’t truly considered, despite being just 90 miles from the United States. It wasn’t until my first visit in 2023 that those impressions began to shift.

The histories of Cuba and the United States are not separate – they have been connected for centuries through exploration, influence, and proximity. But what I encountered was not defined by politics or the past. It was defined by people. Warm, welcoming, and deeply connected to family and community, I found a culture grounded in resilience and resourcefulness. There is a rhythm to daily life shaped by necessity, creativity, and pride.

Across multiple visits to Havana, Viñales, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba, and Baracoa, I have returned to observe, listen, and learn. These photographs reflect moments of work, connection, and everyday life. This exhibit is not a comprehensive portrait, but a personal effort to look more closely and to share what I’ve come to see: a place of depth, complexity, and enduring spirit, revealed one photo at a time.

Personal Note: What began as a single trip has become an ongoing part of my life. I return not just to photograph, but to reconnect—with people, places, and moments that continue to shape how I see the world. Over time, I’ve also begun bringing others with me to share in these experiences and to witness daily life in Cuba more directly. These visits have grown into shared experiences, first in the moment, and then again through the photographs. This work reflects that process, one visit at a time, and now, one photo at a time.
